The city of Targu-Jiu, capital of Gorj County, lies at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, on the banks of the river Jiu. Targu-Jiu is also an important intersection node of the routes that connects Danube with Transylvania and Banat.

Being a Dacian village, before the Romans conquered Dacia, the teritory was coverd of large forest areas. Thus, it offered a good place for residents to hide from invaders. Alexandru Ștefulescu mentioned in one of his works about Targu-Jiu, that, during the Roman occupation, it was a vicus, a commercial resort.

The city is mentioned for the first time in 1406 as “Jiul”, in a command gave by Mirce cel Batran to Tismana Monastery. Also in the 15th century, the city was  mentioned in historical documents as being a market.
